I recently had the opportunity to evaluate GoToMyPC and it truly was a fascinating experience. My good buddy, Linda from the US,
visited me here in Canada and she needed to be able to access her computer in
the US. She'd signed up for one month of service from GoToMyPC. It was amazing!
It was as if we were sitting right in front of her computer. My desktop became
her desktop and we could open and view files from her computer, check her email,
and open programs. We could even copy files from her computer and paste them
into mine! In effect, we were sitting in front of Linda's computer with complete
control of her system. Linda could work on her computer from here and show me
files and images, just as if she had brought her actual computer to Canada.
The only difference is in speedobviously, it wasn't as fast as actually
being there. But this applies to all remote access programsthey can never
give you the PC control for which you are accustomed. It takes a little
adjusting, too, if you've never worked with remote access before. The convenience
of it, however, makes up for the lack of speed. It's great for those who travel
or are out of town on business and may need access to files on their
computer back at the office or at home.
I was so impressed, I contacted GoToMyPC to become an associate with them.
And, believe me, I don't do this unless I am truly impressed.
PC Magazine calls this type of connectivity "revolutionary", since
it is a completely new way to remotely access your computer. It is different
from conventional remote access programs and VPN
connections, not only in method, but in ease of use. It's this user friendliness
that makes GoToMyPc so popular. Anyone, without any network experience, can
set up a GoToMyPc connection in just a few minutes. There is no need to mess
with port
or network
settingsin fact, you don't even have to know your IP
addressor install and configure any hardware or software. And it even works
with firewalls.
Setting Up GoToMyPc
Setup is easy and takes only minutes. First you register at the gotomypc.com
site. Download the "host",
and select a user name and password. You will be given an access code. That's
basically it! It really is quick and easy.
To access your computer from another computer anywhere in the world, just log
in, enter your password and access code, and select your PC from the list. This
will initiate the connection. Within a minute or so you will be fully connected
and the desktop of your home PC will appear in the viewer Window. You can now
access your computer as needed. Obviously, to enable the connection your home
computer must be left on. If there's a power outage while you're away and your
computer shuts off, you will be out of luckunless there is someone at
home or the office who can turn it back on. Unfortunately, this happened to
us after about a week of testing. Linda's computer was no longer accessible,
but it was due to an ongoing freezing problem Linda had been experiencing and
had nothing to do with the remote connection.
Secure Connections
According to PC Magazine who tested it as well... "All remote connections
pass through secure communication servers, which facilitate the communications
using standard TCP
connections and eliminate the need to know host IP addresses or use nonstandard
ports. This makes GoToMyPC firewall friendly. On our tests, we never had to
touch router
or port configurations. GoToMyPC handles security using end-to-end 128-bit encryption,
along with multiple challenge/response password authentication."
GoToMyPC is simple and flexible. Setup takes literally 5 minutes, and you can
access desktops from a dedicated
connection or dial-up with no host reconfiguration. This technology is truly
a novel way to gain remote access of your PC. As far as I know, there is no
other remote
access system like it. It's my pleasure to share something in which I truly believe, like this service, with others. I know if you try it, you will have as much fun with
it as Linda and I did.
