Automating the Installation of Windows 2000/XP: Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2

by Dennis Roche

As you may have heard Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP recently. Not only does this include many critical updates and fixes to the Windows XP operating system, but a new add on called the Internet Connection Firewall or ICF for short. Microsoft has included this as a way of combating malware attacks (viruses, worms, spyware) from infecting and damaging desktop systems that has been so prevalent in the recent years.

But back onto slipstreaming SP2 into the installation of Windows XP. First, if you haven’t read my original article on slipstreaming SP1 into Windows XP installation here. There are some similarities and differences with slip streaming this service pack compared to SP1 and I will be referencing that article constantly throughout this article.

Getting What We Need

Ø      Download Service Pack 2 from here. You can rename it if you like, as I have done just simply WindowsXP_SP2.exe

Creating Locations and Extracting the Data

Ø      Like in my first article, I created a WinXP_CD directory and a WinXP_SP2 directory for the install disk and the service pack.

Ø      Next copy the entire contents of the CD to the WinXP_CD as in Article 1

Ø      Extract the service pack as in Article 1.

Slipstreaming the Service Pack

Note: The slipstream will fail if you have replaced any DLL's or added any Post Service Pack 1a hotfixes as discussed in my article on integrating Critical Updates. You can find that article Here. In order to slipstream on top of another service pack, you must have all hotfixes removed from your installation folder. The best way to do this is recopy the Windows XP CD to a directory and perform the slipstream.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is accumulative so it will contain Service Pack 1 changes.

The slipstream command is slightly different then before. Note the same location for the update.exe file (<SP2_Directory>\i386\Update\Update.exe). The command line options for the Update.exe are below in the screen capture.

With this service pack you will have to use the /integrate switch instead of the /S switch previously in SP1. The command to slipstream Service Pack 2 is as follows:

C:\winxp_SP2\i386\update\update.exe /integrate:c:\winxp_CD\

After which you will see the integration completing as in the screen capture below:

When slipstream is complete, you'll get the following confirmation.

Burning the CD

Ø     You will need to follow my instructions in Article 1 step-by-step for this process. Follow this link here and go to the Burning the CD section.

Ø      You should now have a slipstreamed Windows XP CD with Service Pack 2 installed.
