Fantastic site, one of the best I have seen and being a relative new comer to MS Project the information I get from the articles has helped me a lot, keep it up and I only wish you put a tip a week out instead of one a month...PS keep up the good work

Comments: Hi, I am a newbie. I was just trying replicate the project from http://www.mousetrax.com/pub/Bridge15.zip

I have two question here.

1. The task "Surveys" has Duration 3.1 wks but the Start date is 3 Mar and Enddate is 7 May. How can this happen? The only way i can think of is there might be some vacation period between the two dates. If that is the case how can i define the vacation days?

2. Also when i assign resources the difference is as below

In sample project-> Surveyors 500% 428.57h, Mike 100% 85.72h and Jane 100% 85.72h
In my project -> Surveyors 500% 428.72h, Mike 100% 120.4h and Jane 100% 120.4h

I am really not able to understand where am i doing wrong. Please help me.

The Bridge project was designed by me as a vehicle to show you how to customise Project with value lists, formulae, macros, etc., in articles 15 and then 16. I didn't expect anyone to try to recreate it!

However, the Survey task actually has a duration of 3.01 weeks and starts on 13 Mar 03 to 1 May 03. You seem to have mixed the data with the summary task North Access. The Duration of any task is a measure of the working time between the start and finish of the task. In the case of the survey task, resource levelling has created a split in the task and thus the end date is much later than originally planned, but the working time is still 3.01 weeks.

As for the resource allocation data, unless you have exactly the same calendars created and the Tools/Options... settings are identical, you can easily get different answers.

The article was easy to follow and demonstrate throughly. Though I was unable to get the results on the report - I am getting #Name as the results of each control source. What step that I missed from this article?

There are a few things that could have happened here, and Access doesn't make it easy for you; '#Name' covers a multitude of sins. Are you using the example file? If not, have a look and check the expressions against your syntax. If there's nothing obviously wrong, then feel free to email me your example and I'll have a look when I can.

Just found your site while wandering through the web instead of working. I'm impressed by the quality of the site and the comments. I mention Dian specifically because I was taken by the forthrightness of her comments about free information and consulting services. Very nicely done.

Regarding: Honey, I'm Home!
This is the second time I've read this story and it makes me feel good that so many people will go out of their way to help even unknown animals get to a new home with friends they've made in war zones! Kindness very often reaps unknown rewards! Good luck to all those caring people!!

what and how do i get a OS CD? as i have forgot my master password and cannot access my computer and apparently i need a OS CD to complete the rebooting process? Please get back asap as i urgently need help. thankyou

Dian Chapman, Editor of TechTrax, writes...

You should have received your operating system CD with your computer! If you didn't, you'll need to contact the place where you got your computer and ask them for a backup CD. They should have given you a backup of all the software you received with your computer, including your OS. OR...maybe they said you were to create your own backup when you got the computer, which is sometimes the case. What does it say in your owner's manual?

Hi Marco. Using your example (Cel A1 in sheet1 in Work_Folder2.xls linking cel B10 in sheet1 in Work_Folder1.xls), do this:

In Cell A1 on Sheet1 in Work_Folder2.xls, enter this formula:

=[Work_Folder1]Sheet1!$B$10

Regarding: Using "AND" in an "IF" function
Thank you very much for your infomative article. I have never used Excel until I took a job that uses it exclusively. During these first two months, I have compiled quite a library or "Excel Help" bookmarks. I probably know more about the sites than Excel. Your article was succinct, helpful, and clear. And do not think I didn't notice the tone. It was nice to be helped without being made to feel like an idiot. Which I am most likely not. -RADamady

Linda Johnson, author of Introduction to IF Statements in Excel, writes...

Thanks for the thanks, Adam. And thanks for "noticing the tone". When I first started learning computers, so many people who knew more than me DID talk to me like I was an idiot (which I also am not), so I try very hard NOT to have that tone. Happy Holidays!
