Clipart, Part 1

by Kim Hedrich

This article covers the clipart that comes with Word (built in), as well as other sources of clipart. Please note the different instructions for Word 2000 and Word 2002.

Accessing Built-in Clipart

Word 2000

Click on Insert – Picture – Clipart, or

Open the Drawing toolbar (View – Toolbars – Drawing) and click on the Clipart icon.

This displays the clipart gallery.

Type in keywords at the top. Alternatively, select a category, and then select a picture from within that category.

Word 2000’s Clipart Gallery

Word 2002

Clipart in Word 2002 is in a task pane. You can:

Click on Insert – Picture – Clipart, or

Tip! Click on the Clip Organiser button at the bottom of the Insert Clipart task pane. Click the plus-sign next to Office Collections to expand the list of topics.

Locating a picture

Word 2000

In Word 2000, the clipart gallery remains displayed until you close it. After adding a picture to your document, you may want to minimize the clipart gallery so that you can view your document.

There are two ways to locate a suitable picture.

  1. Choose, then click on, a category (eg Animals, Nature, People). Then choose a picture from the category, or,
  2. Type in a keyword ((at the top where it says “Type one or more words...”). Press Enter to display your matching pictures.

There are some special categories in the clipart gallery. These are outlined below:

New Category

Create a new category for your clipart objects.

Favourites

Add clipart to this category if you use it often. It starts out blank.

Downloaded clips

This contains clips downloaded from the Microsoft Clipart Gallery website. Note that they also appear in at least one other category.

Photographs

This starts out containing no pictures. Pictures are added if you use Clips Online and choose Photos.

There are also three tabs within the gallery – Pictures, Sounds, Motion Clips. Clicking on each tab gives you the same categories. However, the objects are restricted to sounds or motion clips (animations). Both are thin on the ground until you have downloaded some from the web.

Word 2002

To find a picture to use in Word 2002, enter a keyword into the Insert Clipart task pane. Press Enter or click on Search to display matching pictures.

Alternatively, click on the Clip Organizer link at the bottom of the task pane. Expand the Office Collections topic to view its categories. Click on a category to view pictures within the category. Other topics may also contain pictures, depending on how your system has been set up, and whether you have downloaded clips from the web (clips online).

Adding a picture

Word 2000

There are two ways to add a picture into your document.

Use the menu:

  1. Click once on the picture.
  2. Choose the TOP option from the menu displayed.
  3. Minimise the clipart gallery.

Click and drag:

  1. Click on the clipart object.
  2. Drag it to the left or right. The clipart gallery shrinks down so you can see your document.
  3. Release the mouse button.

Word 2002

Click where you want your picture to be inserted.

Click once on the picture.

Floating vs. Inline

Pictures added to your document using the clipart gallery will be either floating or inline.

An inline picture has a solid border around the outside, and black handles.

This object cannot be easily moved, although you can use the Left, Centre or Right alignment buttons on the Formatting toolbar, and you can drag it up or down. It acts like another character in the document. You cannot wrap text around it over it.

To change the clipart object to floating, use the Picture toolbar. If this is not visible when the object is selected, right-click on the object and choose Show Picture Toolbar.

Click on the Text Wrapping button.

Choose from the options listed.

Square

Text is wrapped around the object but retains its left alignment.

Tight

Text follows the shape of the object, including curves.

Behind Text

The object sits on top of the text. This makes the text unreadable wherever the object blocks it.

In front of text

The text appears on top of the object. Legibility depends on the colours used.

Top and bottom

Text appears above and below the object. The object however is converted to Floating, so it can be moved easily.

Through

Text appears within the boundaries of the object, yet does not overlap any part of it. For example, if the graphic is of a standing dog (side on) and there is space between his front and back legs, text will appear there.

Edit wrap points

Modify manually the way you want the text to wrap around the object.

Other Clipart Gallery Options

These buttons also appear at the top of the Clipart Gallery.

They allow you to go back, forwards, and return to the main screen.

Notice too the following buttons.

Import clips

Import your own clipart into the gallery. Choose a category for it.

Clips online

Download clipart from the Microsoft web site

Help

Display a help screen about clipart in general.

Other Clipart

There are other sources of clipart. These include:

CD-ROMs

Visit almost any software shop and you should be able to find CD-ROMs containing clipart. These are sometimes on a particular theme (eg business).

Their quality varies, as does the clipart format (.wmf, .jpg, .gif).

Internet

Search for free clipart on the internet. Right-click and choose to save it. Select a folder.

Tip: it can be useful to word your search based on the topic (eg “free clipart computers”). This refines your search.

Clips online

Open the Clipart Gallery and choose Clips Online.

Download the object of the day, objects of the month, or type in keywords.

Click on the icon below the picture to add it to the clipart gallery.

Leave the clipart gallery open during this process.

Photos

Scan in photos and use them in your work.

Tip: put some objects on the scanner – pens, pencils, rubbers, etc. Scan them in.

Your own work

Create or modify pictures in graphic applications (eg Photoshop, PowerPoint, Photo Editor). Use those in your work.

Clipart from the internet, CD-ROMs or scanned images may not be in .wmf format. This means resizing will not retain proportions or sharpness of the image. Be careful when resizing these other formats.
